reading materials.

Here in Glasgow, I spend a lot of time online. Like a lot a lot. 24-7 a lot. Apart from the usual streaming of increasingly mediocre and inane movies and series, I also spend a great deal of time reading the blogs of people I may or may not know. And because it’s currently 3am and I am afflicted with a bad spell of insomnia despite the prophylactic consumption of two large glasses of red wine earlier, I shall now proceed to give you, my imaginary readers, a sampling of my favorite blogs.

First up is Sex and the Ivy. Yes, you guessed right, it is a blog about sex, among other things. The author is a controversial Asian-American Harvard undergraduate(I think, still), Lena Chen. She’s a fabulous writer and despite the many salacious details of her sex life splashed on her blog, I get the impression that she’s a girl with her head screwed on right. Hey if men sleep around nobody dares says anything, yet when women do it, they are labeled sluts and whores? Lengthy posts, sometimes deliberately provocative photos and an insight into the sexual empowerment of a woman at its best(or worst).

Next up is Su Ann aka PinkPau, who blogs at quaintly.net. One of those Malaysian uber-bloggers who has been blogging since forever despite being three?four? years younger than me. She too, is an excellent writer, and could quite possibly  squeeze more life experiences in one year than I have in my 20 odd years of existence. Her candid accounts of her LDR, her battles with calculus, her travels and dealings with friends and family make for surprisingly thought-provoking readings at times.

Finally, I am going to pimp sweatlee.com, owned by the very cute Suet Lee, another Malaysian uber-blogger. She’s hilarious and hugely entertaining, always good for a laugh when you desperately need some form of distraction. She and her boyfriend of 4 years are very cute together and the story of how they got together is very, very sweet. Read her anniversary posts, here, here, here and here to find out what I mean. =p

I have to say though, one thing that annoys me when I read quaintly.net or sweatlee.com is that they are well, uber-bloggers. And they write advertorials. And it is very disappointing to read a post which I thought was intensely personal and sweet and insightful and go awww… only to find out in the end that it was an advertorial. =( Very potong stim. Example here. The girls do write well though.

The common thread in these is that these are all smart, funny, beautiful young women who know what they want and are out to get it. No damsels in distress waiting for their Prince Charming to ride up on the metaphorical white horse and rescuse them from whatever dire circumstances they find themeselves in.
